The Erzgebirge Guide

The Sonnenhotel Hoher Hahn sits on a peaceful rise in Schwarzenberg-Bermsgrün, some 670 metres above sea level. For more than a hundred years, Schwarzenberg has carried the nickname „Pearl of the Erzgebirge" – and this is exactly where your holiday begins. Walking and cycling trails start right at the house, and all around you stretch wooded heights, scenic viewpoints and centuries of mining history. In this guide we have gathered the loveliest sides of the region for you.

Almost 800 years of mining have shaped the Erzgebirge. Since 2019, the Montanregion Erzgebirge/Krušnohoří with its 22 components has been a cross-border UNESCO World Heritage Site. Discover more about this fascinating history in our World Heritage article.

In winter the region becomes a paradise for cross-country skiing, downhill skiing and tobogganing. The Fichtelberg (1,214.88 m, the highest mountain in Saxony) is home to the largest ski area in the Free State, and trails such as the Kammloipe guarantee snow-sure kilometres.
